Over the last month, I've had the pleasure of working with Phoebe Lawless on her newest restaurant's private events space, 'Upstairs and Rooftop at The Lakewood.' Phoebe is best known in the Triangle for Scratch Bakery, a favorite local spot in downtown Durham for baked goods and counter lunch service. A smaller version of Scratch is going to be located downstairs at the Lakewood.
Located above the main restaurant, the newly renovated private event space features an enclosed rooftop and an indoor loft area. The upstairs space is going to be perfect for intimate weddings up to 50 guests, rehearsal dinners and receptions, and daytime luncheons. The rooftop could also be the ideal location for a bridal or baby shower. I can't wait to see what's next for the team over there, and it's been a pleasure getting their private events off the ground!
The Lakewood Building & Upstairs
Originally constructed in the 1920s, the building was the original home of the Davis Baking Company, founded by local Dairy farmers, Cary and Charlie Crutchfield. After decades in operation, Davis Baking closed up shop in the 1990s.The current renovation of the building has preserved the best earmarks of the building’s pre-war origins, including its iconic historic sign, with both classic and modern utilitarian interior details. The Davis Baking sign is afixed to the Upstairs loft space (pictured above).
The entire downstairs restaurant is also available for your next party or wedding, in combination with the rooftop and upstairs space.
Chef Lawless is offering a range of events menus, including Seasonal, Artisanal cocktails, American craft cookery, and an array of her famous desserts.
At the end of the day, drinks on the roof. Speaks for itself!
